Outlandish Outsourcing
During the morning rituals of breakfast and coffee, Lou Dobbs was on television for a bit. It was background noise until a story came on about a Pasadena news website that has outsourced a journalism job to India.

Take a minute to soak that one up.

A writer in India is covering local Pasadena news.

It gave me chills and not the sort that I enjoy.

It doesn't. It actually creates work. The editor will have to go back and put flavor into the writing to make it seem pertinent to locals.

Thank the gods it's only a website. Still incredibly whacked, though. I've worked with people in Mumbai and New Delhi when AmEx started outsourcing. They're as clueless about our culture as the average American is about their's. How does he expect this to work?

I think most of us have experience with them in customer service situations. It's difficult to communicate and, yes, there is a cultural divide. But having 'local news' covered by someone a world away who's never even seen Pasadena or understands it in any context is just outrageous.

And the very idea that a writer is only worth 12K a year is truly sad.

That article infuriated me--not the least of which because that assclown of an editor seems to think that reading a transcript of what happened at the city council meeting seems adequate. Unbelievable. $12k for a stringer, though, isn't so very bad.

It's utterly ridiculous and I hope he's not paving the way for more of this in serious places.
