New Year's Eve was an incredible night. I raced from Downtown Los Angeles to meet [info]__wolverine__ at Ivan Kane's Cafe Was in Hollywood for a multiple course meal and a very intimate night with Jeff Goldblum's jazz ensemble. For those not familiar with the venue, Cafe Was is a very tiny, European inspired bistro with a rotating piano at its heart. Every seat in the house on the main floor was a mere breath away from the action. It was both surreal and simply unforgettable. I found my mind disassociating many times because I couldn't believe I was there.

Dinner was fantastic and our server was very old school in his style. The food wasn't quite as mind blowing as anything Michael Mina produces but we were very satisfied. We even had some quail, which I haven't dined upon since I was a young adult spreading my culinary wings. Besides, Perrier Jouet makes everything taste magical, the ambiance was epic and our server added his own value.

The entertainment was world class. We sat among various other accomplished musicians, artists and friends of Ivan Kane's (who was there with his effervescent wife) listening to the sweet sounds of Jeff's band. I wish I could find the words to paint an image of what it was like but it's a memory I will hang like a pearl on a necklace along with others for the duration of my life. I can't think of any better way to end one year and begin the next. I hope it's a harbinger of things to come.

I ended up getting my birthday off. I had been resigned to the idea of working, though very cranky about it. So, the change of circumstance was like a gift. I didn't do anything at all, which might sound tragically lame. I sat at home with [info]__wolverine__ in my Hello Kitty pajamas and lounged. It was perfect. I couldn't have asked for anything more. I had a few gifts to open. Everything was pink. Breakfast and dinner were taken care of for the day, along with my favorite kind of coffee. It was very serene, particularly since I didn't tell (remind) anyone about the date.

Intermingled with the bursts of wonderful have been the constant continuation of non-stop work and the starkly detailed high definition reality of what comprises my life. It's only the fourth day into 2010 and I'm ready to get apocalyptic on humanity. I've worked over time. I've been called into extra shifts. I see no relief in sight as yet but I have made my desires known and have started to move forward with extracting myself from that whole endless cycle of fruitless drudgery.

I'm glad that you had fun Thursday night, and I'm glad that you got your birthday off.

And I am glad that (if I read your post accurately), that you had Friday to recover before Saturday!

No. I had to work an overtime shift New Year's Day. And I was very hungover.

Hooray pour les dangereux!

Sounds like you had a teeny smidgeon of two things you've been craving- rest and glamour.

I'm glad. Happy Birthday, fellow Capricorn. May the year treat you better and better with every passing day.

Yes, I did get what I asked for from the Universe. Time to refine those requests so I am back creating instead of servicing.

Happy Birthday to you as well. I shouldn't be surprised that we share that Capricorn mentality.

Jeff Goldblum is an astounding jazz pianist. He plays here in Los Angeles regularly, usually at Aqua in Beverly Hills. If you haven't seen him, you must. He's simply marvelous. And the people watching at his Aqua gigs is among the best I've ever witnessed.
